Bargaining Update #1

"Unions can rebuild the middle class, just as we built it two generations
earlier. We bring better pay and beneftis. In fact, union bargaining for fair
pay mans a worker takes home on average, approximately $207 more a week."
– Laura Reyes, AFSCME Secretary-Treasurer, Huffington Post, May 6, 2015

As we have done over the last few years, CEO and MEF are bargaining jointly with the City for successor Memoranda of Agreement (MOA). We commenced negotiations on Thursday April 23, and have met with the City three times already. Our next session is scheduled for May 15 in the afternoon.

The Negotiating Team is: Yolanda Cruz, Andy Paul, Robyn Zamora, Dab Earl, Cindy Harlin, Brent Harvey (all MEF), LaVerne Washington, Linda Alexander, and Sandra Guerrero (all CEO). AFSCME Business Agent Charles Allen is the Chief Negotiator. Proposals and various correspondence may be found on the Union website at: www.mef101.org. The City Office of Employee Relations also posts items of its website.

In addition to our negotiating team, we have reestablished our Contract Action Team (CAT) to support the negotiations. We are actively seeking participants to join this group. We meet regularly on Wednesday night at 5:00 p.m. This meeting is a chance to review proposals, provide feedback from the membership and disseminate information for the membership. All are welcome.

We have scheduled a number of negotiating sessions in advance and our negotiating calendar looks like this:

  • Friday May 15, 1:30-5:00
  • Tuesday May 19, 2:00-5:00
  • Wednesday May 20, 2:00-5:00
  • Tuesday May 26, 2:00-5:00
  • Thursday June 4, 2:00-5:00
  • Friday June 5, 2:00-5:00
  • Monday June 8, 2:00-5:00
  • Thursday June 11, 8:30-12:00

While we are in negotiations for a successor MOA, we are also engaged in confidential settlement discussions with the City concerning Measure B. Not wanting to rest, we are also participants of an ongoing Retiree Healthcare Working Group that seeks to address the increasing costs of retiree healthcare as well as the two Tier 2 employee groups.

Our current Retiree Healthcare agreement was recently extended through the end of December 2015, and the contributions will not be increasing. The recent ratification vote both MEF and CEO passed the TA with 98%. Thanks to all who braved the inclement weather and voted. We still need more membership involvement and input. Check out the dates below and join us; now is the time to get involved!
